Who Knew

So..... I've discovered a new find! :) I went to the library a few weeks ago.... and you'll never guess what they had?! BOOKS!!! They had BOOKS! Of course they have books for adults (I've been reading some Nora Roberts mystery/romance novels lately!).... but did you know they have books for kids? Of course they have books with paper pages that Kayla could/would tear through in 5 minutes (um, thank you Continental for providing the four SkyMall magazines my daughter destroyed on our flight to/from MA). But did you know they have books for babies?!?! They do! Nice, hard, cardboard books. Well, if you knew this you are more clever than I am. I was pleasantly surprised (read: shocked) to find this out. I have a policy in our house that "we don't eat books". In theory, these board books are hard to destroy. But give Kayla a little time with them, and the corners are wet and pieces are being eaten. So, I don't leave books on the floor for her to play with. We read lots of books during the day. We read them before every nap, before bed, and a variety of other times. But I don't get them out and leave them around because I want them to stay intact. SOOOO... when I discovered these books at the library, books that have already been loved (read:eaten) by other children.... well, I fell in love. Now every time I go to get a new book for me, we exchange and get several new books for her... and then we leave them on the floor in the living room. And she LOVES them. She brings them to me to read all of the time! Like, ALL the time. Makes me feel really bad about my "rule"... here I am depriving my child of books! How terrible! So, I'm putting our tax dollars to work, and letting her play with the librabry books instead of my own. And you know what? She is getting so much better about not eating them!! Like, so much better that I'd almost consider letting her at some of ours!! I'm such a good mom!! :)

Blueberries and Babies

We went blueberry picking for the first time this season. Kayla enjoyed being fed blueberries! In fact, she quickly learned how to pick them and eat them for herself! Super cute!!

Here is a picture of us Saturday morning picking blueberries with Marcie....

And here is a picture of us Sunday evening with Marcie and her new baby girl, Adelaide!! She is adorable!!! I just love new babies!

Amazing what a difference a day makes, huh?!

Girls Only Trip

Kayla and I took a trip to MA this past week to visit Grandma and Grandpa Slighter! We had a really fun time. I got in some major relaxing, read another book, was able to get another nice break from Kayla, and enjoyed the company of my parents! It is just so fun seeing them interact with Kayla. She was such a pleasure on the trip... she made the plane rides as easy as they could be, given that she's an active child. She took naps when she needed to, and didn't scream or even cry really at all (much to the pleasure of everyone else on the plane)! And she was her usual cheery self the whole time we were in MA! My parents just loved having her (I mean us!!!) there!

My mom is by trade a teacher (although she hasn't taught since before I came around!), and you can totally tell by the way she interacts with Kayla! She was teaching her so many new things, and gave me a lot of new ideas of how to interact and teach Kayla. And I got to see some sides of Kayla that I hadn't before. My mom taught her what a clock is and what a fan is.... and when prompted ("Kayla, where's the clock") she'd point to it! One time she even said "tick" when we asked her where it was (because my mom was saying "tick, tick, tick goes the clock")! I was amazed. And Kayla mastered some of the toys my mom had (like how to sit in the chair, etc) quickly. It was so fun to see her learn things. Also, my parents have a back massage "toy" that Kayla enjoyed. When you press the button the massage balls turn neon blue and vibrate. Well, Kayla loved to have her head and back massaged with this, but she isn't quite strong enough to push the button so it will stay on (she can push it and it goes on for a second, until she takes her finger off). Well, Kayla realized this, and yanked my dad's finger to the button for him to push it for her! What a smart and resourceful girl!! So fun! She clearly is learning the whole cause and effect relationship, and I just love it!

One morning mom took Kayla and me to the Children's Discovery Museum. We had a blast! Kayla kept walking from room to room and playing with the new things in each room. They have a water room, a kitchen room, a jungle room, a cause & effect room (I think we could have spent hours in that room alone, it was fascinating to adults too!!) and many more.... each with different toys, obstacles and colors! It was the perfect place for someone her age, and for years to come. Due to a pre-school field trip, we weren't able to spend too long there, so we'll have to go back next time!

We also took Kayla swimming in a kiddy pool at LCA. It was a little cold, but she had a good time. We gave her a noodle to play with too, but she was far more interested in tearing off pieces of that with her teeth!

As always, leaving family is hard. We have such a good time when we go to visit. This was the longest we've been away from David (we were gone Friday-Wednesday) and we missed him.... so it was nice to come home and spend time with him! Thankfully, my parents will be out here in just a few weeks, so the good-bye was only for a short time!

11 Months

The biggest change this past month has been walking. She walks, almost exclusively. The only time I see her crawl is if she is completely exhausted, or if she is trying to get to a toy that is just a few feet away. Otherwise, it's walk, walk, walk!! And, I wouldn't say she's running yet, but sometimes it appears that she's trotting or something! It's funny to hear her little feet patter on the floor! :) Her balance has improved and she no longer needs to walk with her hands out to stay steady. In fact, she'd rather carry something in each hand and something in her mouth! Silly girl. She also learned this past month to stand up by herself (like in the middle of the room). Previously she needed a toy or a person or a wall or a piece of furniture to help her stand!

She has starting dancing to music if she hears it on tv, or from one of her toys. It's subtle, but she starts shaking her little bootie, or swaying, or bouncing her head! It is super-cute to watch!

She waves hello and goodbye all the time now! It's a floppy wrist action, which is funny to see, but she definitely knows to do it when we are coming and going! It's fun! I should say that she usually waves in response to us showing her how to wave.... she doesn't necessarily do it all by herself. We say, "Can you say goodbye?" and wave, and then she joins in! Sometimes she does it all on her own, but not always!

We are also trying to teach her "High-5". Sometimes she gets it, sometimes not so much! :)

My can she climb. Still can't climb down anything, though! She is so cute when she climbs the couches. She knows I'm watching her, so when she gets all the way up, she turns, gets this devious look and starts laughing because she knows I'm coming in to swoop her off! It's quite precious, really. But TROUBLE!! She has started showing an interest in climbing up the baby gates too. I figure it's only a matter of time before I walk into her room and she is standing outside of her crib. I'm hoping it's not for many, many months... but I'm certain she will be one of those kids who figures out how to do that.

Her sleeping habits are changing rapidly. Just when I'm down to some sort of rhythm she goes and changes things on us!! She is now sleeping more like 10 hours at night (used to be 11), but she is napping quite a bit longer than her normal 30 mins naps. Sometimes I get two 1.5 hour naps out of her! And then, well, sometimes not. I suppose she's still averaging about the same amount of sleep (12-13 hours), but it's in different spurts. I'm actually quite happy with this arrangement, although I wish she'd sleep longer at nights. I have no problem with her getting up at 8, that's perfect. But I'd really like for her to go to bed earlier than her 9:30-10ish bedtime of late. However, not at the expense of her getting up earlier in the morning! We'll see. We are out at Bible Study every Tuesday, and have soccer every Thursday, and are often out with friends on the weekends, so it would be hard to put her down earlier and be consistent about it.... unless we wanted to give up some of those activities (which we don't). And it's not like she is out of sorts at 9.... she is happy as a clam. So, we'll see what happens with that.

Looks comfy, huh?!

At our last Dr apt (10.5 months), our doctor challenged me to shake up how I'd been doing her nursing/solids feedings. I really like our doctor. He gives advice that you typically don't expect doctors to give (we got a lesson on discipline too!), and for the most-part I really appreciate it. He says it in a very non-threatening way... and bases it on his 25+ years of experience and what he sees that works and doesn't work. And he wasn't giving this advice after I told him how I was doing things (and therefore saying I should be doing them his way instead), but rather just as a general "note". Anyway, I had previously been alternating nursings and solids, so she was eating every 2-3 hours. He suggested that I try to do them one after the other (feed her breakfast, then nurse her right after.... feed her lunch, nurse her right after). I was a bit skeptical of the plan, but part of his reasoning was that it's not good for her to be grazing all day long... not good for her teeth (and goodness knows she has enough of them!)... and also it helps her absorb nutrients better if things are done together. So, I've been trying this only for about a week, as I wasn't going to start something new while we were on vacation. But it seems to be working pretty well. It's setting up for a more normal pattern (eating b-fast around 8, lunch around 12:30) of daily life, that will be sustainable once I am no longer nursing. My biggest fear in eating solids and then nursing right after was that she'd be hungry in-between. And I know I could just give her a snack.... but still. However, it seems to be working really well. I'm impressed! I'm still nursing her either right before or right after her afternoon nap, and then we eat dinner around 6ish... so those aren't back-to-back.... but it's a start at least. I figure, I myself can't make it from lunch to dinner without a snack, so, when we're done nursing we can replace it with a snack. And then I still nurse her right before bed. In some ways, I'm kinda sad with these changes. Part of the reason I'm changing is because I clearly am not going to nurse her forever, so I'm setting up a situation where weaning is a possibility... and while I'll be happy when that does happen, I'm also going to be quite sad as well. A few new foods she's had this months: brats, hotdogs, strawberries and cherries!

We've also started to get a more solid bedtime routine. Part of this is because I want to have other things in that routine besides me nursing her.... again, thinking about weaning. So, we brush her teeth, turn on her nightlight and side light, read a book... then turn on her noise-machine, turn off the side light, nurse, snuggle a little, sing her a song, say a prayer, and put her in bed. I'm not saying the nursing would be an easy part to skip! But again, at least we're setting up a routine.

I wouldn't say she has said her first word yet. Sometimes she says words in the correct context (Dada to David, Mama to me, "dow" when she sees a dog, "eye" instead of hi when she sees someone, "ju" when she sees her sippy cup of juice), but it's not consistent, so I'm not really going to count it as saying real words! She has added new sounds to her babble, though, and it's darn cute. She's learned to make noises by rolling her tongue... so it sounds like she says "golly" over and over (gollygollygollygollygollygolly) with the rolled tongue. It's so adorable! She can also make these noises: blowing kisses, smacking her lips, "brrrr", clicking her tongue and several other fun things (and the old staple - raspberries!)! She's been able to do most of those for several months, but I thought I'd write it down here so I remember!! Also, one time when I was doing "Head and Shoulders" with her, she started singing along with me!

At her Dr apt she weighed 19 lbs 3 oz, which puts her in the 30th percentile (compared to other 11 month olds, although she was just 10.5 months). And she was 30 inches long, which puts her in the 95th percentile. And her head circumference was 18 in, which puts her in the 75th percentile. Height and head are staying in the same percentiles, but her weight keeps dropping! All that activity is shedding her baby fat! Overall she is a very healthy girl. The doctor called her "his little athlete" as she was practically running all over his office!

1. Her eyes are still a pretty blue color.
2. Her left tear duct hasn't had been crusty this past month, but we aren't convinced it has cleared up yet.
3. She very rarely spits up.

Knee High by the 4th of July

For the 4th of July this year we flew to NC to spend time with David's family. We had a rough series of events on the way there - thunderstorms delayed all of our flights, and instead of arriving at 8:30pm we arrived around 1am. If it's not one thing, it's another. We seem to have a history of delayed flights. Such is life. However, Kayla did (reasonably) well on the flights. She fights sleep, and gave a nice production for everyone to hear on the 2nd flight. But once she fell asleep, she didn't wake up until the next morning (even after being carried off the plane, put into the car seat, taken out of the carseat and put into her bed... which was in a closet!!).

While there, we were able to relax and I got a much needed break from Kayla. I still played with her some, and fed her and took some responsibility for her. But with 6 willing babysitters around (plus David), I really didn't do much! I have an internal dilema- I feel guilty asking others to take responsible for her... I feel like people view me as lazy if I don't take charge of her. I realize that to people who don't spend time with her every day, it's a joy to take on that responsibility.... but it still is work, and I have trouble skirting my work, if that makes sense. But Mom Taylor especially made me feel guilt free and encouraged me to get time away from her. I read an entire book on our trip, often stepping outside and reading on the deck so I wouldn't even see or hear Kayla and be distracted! It was a true vacation for me. I was able to relax and enjoy myself and really truly get a break from Kayla. I can't even begin to say how valuable that was to me. Back home alone with her this week has actually been a lot of fun, because I hadn't spent one-on-one time with her very much the past several days.

Grandma and Pop-pop had fun shopping for some new toys for Kayla! She was in her glory, and enjoyed each of them. She would have loved to play with Indy too (their dog), but Indy was not so excited about that arrangement. By the end, Indy warmed up to her - although I think it was more in hopes of Kayla dropping more food from her high chair!!

Our first day there we spent time at their country club pool. They bought a crab pool float for her, and we took her to the baby pool. It was only about 2 feet deep, and she was able to walk around on the bottom of it. Without the float, she kept falling, and the water got in her face, which wasn't fun. But with the float she could walk around and stay with her head above the water, and she was having a blast (um, nevermind that the directions to the crab spefically mention that the child should not be able to touch the bottom of the pool and walk)!! There was also a waterslide that David and I went down a few times! It was a nice relaxing afternoon.

Friday was the 4th. We spent the morning and afternoon chilling at the house. Then we headed to a park area where they had an orchestra playing and fireworks at dark. We sat on a blanket and had a picnic! The music was fun, but sadly right before the fireworks were about to start a huge thunderstorm rolled in and they were canceled. We amazingly didn't get too soaked on our walk back to the car (we stayed under a tree while the heavy rains came down, then left during the calm between storms!). We had a good evening, but were sad not to have seen the fireworks.

On Saturday Steph and Nick joined us. We went to a huge Fleamarket area ("It's just like, it's just like a mini-mall") where there are hundreds (thousands maybe) of vendors. When we got back, we took a walk around their neighborhood and fed the ducks!! Then we had a huge family dinner together! Kayla enjoyed helping Grandma with the cooking! Fireworks were rescheduled for Saturday night, so we drove to see them. However, they started 30 mins before they were scheduled (due to another storm coming in), so we ended up in a parking lot to watch them instead of up close. Oh well! Kayla seemed to enjoy them, and it wasn't too loud for her. Afterwords, we headed back to the house and played with sparklers which Kayla enjoyed!

Sunday we spent on the lake on a pontoon boat, and Steph and Nick brought their jetski. It wasn't supposed to be a nice day, but it turned out to be beautiful! We had such a good time. I'd never been on a jetski before, and it was quite thrilling.... I screamed about the whole time I was on it!! Kayla did not enjoy her life jacket to start, but then got used to it, and really enjoyed being on a boat! She even got her sea-legs after walking around for a little bit! She really enjoyed being in the water too!

We also had a chance to take some family photos!!

Monday was our last day there, and we went out to a late lunch before heading to the airport. We had a wonderful trip. It was so fun to see everyone interact with Kayla. It makes us so sad that we live so far away and don't see family more often than we do. I just re-read what I wrote on my "I need a vacation" post, and smiled :) I feel so refreshed and so relaxed. What an answer to prayer!!

More pictures from our trip and some new videos have been added!
