She Moves in Mysterious Ways

Well, she learned how to crawl this past weekend (see this cute video!!). Finally the hands figured it out and she can totally crawl! My baby girl is growing up so quickly I can't believe it!!

Also, who needs toys? I mean, we have plenty of toys, and she plays with them on occasion. But what are her favorites? David's empty gatorade bottle. The underside of the jumperoo. The wicker basket that holds her toys. The strap to her high chair. Her wipes container. The shoes on her feet. The remote controls. My hair. Seriously!!!

Several new videos have been added as well - enjoy!!

Basement Remodel

So, we decided to remodel the basement. This is the one project we thought we'd never do in this house, but after Kayla was born we decided to rethink that plan. For Christmas we got a a basement remodeling do-it-yourself book, a toolbelt, a HD giftcard and some money to get us on our way! So, after much thought and planning the project started. We tore out all the old shelving, moved the freezer (including electrical), built new storage in the back area of the basement and moved everything out of the main area. Next step was to get the new lighting setup and then the framing of the walls. After that was done, we added outlets throughout the room. All of this work was done in a hustle and a bustle as we wanted to get all of this done before Mom & Dad Slighter came out to visit as I planned to put Dad to work helping me out. Together he and I finished framing the soffits that covered the gas and water lines and the Heating and Cooling duct work. We had someone come in and add 2 new registers and 1 return for the room to make sure we had adequate air in the room. This turned out to be a leading project...

I say leading because, this company spent close to 10 hours at our house over the course of 3 days. They started with just the new duct work. Then on Saturday as dad and I were tiding up some wiring, we found old phone lines, which I traced and found to be dead so I cut them, and then cut a few more.... Oops, that last one happened to be the line to our thermostat :( So, now we had no heat and it's 36 degrees outside. I was able to get in touch with the owner and he came out and fixed us up and proceeded to give me a hard time (in jest) about cutting the line. He also quoted us on a new hot water heater since ours was 24 years old!!! So, bright and early on Monday they were back out with a shiny new water heater. At least now we won't have to fret about our basement flooding because of the old water heater dying on us.

Having all the work out of the way, dad and I were able to make quick progress in the basement with the drywall. We spent Saturday and Sunday hanging the drywall and Monday and Tuesday doing the mud work. Without all the work that dad helped with, I know we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are with the project. I've put a few pictures below for you to preview what's happened so far, and here's a link to the whole project album.

Oh yeah, you can't have all work and no play! So Lisa is the definitive pinball wizard in our house seeing as how she has an all time high score of over 500,000!

A Visit from G&G Slighter

Grandma and Grandpa Slighter came out again this March for their annual spring break visit! It is very convenient that my dad has 2 weeks of vacation right around my birthday each year! But it was not all fun and games while they were here. We worked like dogs! :) We are in the process of finishing our basement, and before they came David was working extremely hard on getting the basement as far as possible so he could use my dad's help. Well, while they were in town the drywall got bought, put up, and coats 1 and 2 of mud got done as well! The house is a mess (gotta love drywall dust) but the room is really taking shape. My mom took over the majority of Kaya watching, as I helped in the basement a bit too. Otherwise, the three girls did some shopping while the boys were working away! I got some cute new outfits for spring break and the spring/summer! And we also got some things for Kayla's room (a light fixture for the ceiling and a cute reading lamp!), as well as a bunch of misc. things. We had a wonderful visit - they were here almost a week! It was fun to watch them interact with Kayla. She really enjoyed playing with them. Here are some pictures of their visit, and there are many more in her 8th month pictures!!

7 Months

A few updates for her 7th month! This past month has brought on many changes. I suppose that is something I am going to be saying each month for the first year or so, but she really has changed so much!

She has learned to sit up really well. I can leave her alone sitting when I leave the room, although I make sure she can't hit her head on anything on the way down! She doesn't cry or panic when she does fall, though. I always say "timber!" when she is on her way down, so she smiles! She has also started to learn to catch herself with her hand if she does lose her balance.

She is really almost crawling now (check out the cute video!). She gets up on all 4 and rocks back and forth. Her feet make the crawling motion, but her hands stay still. She gets enough momentum that she lunges herself foward and falls on her face! And then gets up on all 4s to do it all over again! She does kind of know how to army crawl (crawl while on her tummy), but she isn't moving anywhere fast. But she can get to what she wants. It's nice that she can get to the toys that she wants to play with! However, I'm nervous about all of the baby-proofing that still needs to be done. It's coming together. We've moved a lot out of the main living/dining room area. And I've moved all of the cats stuff (litter, food and water) into the back office so that they can eat and such in peace. We've tried to put the gate up, but they don't get it really. Wesley just whines and then after like 20 minutes jumps over it. Buttercup thinks we are punishing her, so her tail gets all big and she frieks out. So, we only put it up for a little bit after Kayla goes to bed. After a few more days of that, we'll keep it up all the time. I just want to make sure they aren't too afraid to go in there so they don't starve, or worse find another place to go to the bathroom!

She is also eating solids now, in full force! We are just feeding her once a day at dinnertime. She sits in her high-chair while we eat dinner and we feed her after that. She started out taking just 1 oz of food, but now is eating more like 3 each time (plus Cherios!). She self-feeds the Cherios, which has been hilarious to watch! The first time, she had all but 1 or 2 stuck in the pocket of her bib! But now, she's able to grab them with her fingers and shove them in her mouth much more efficiently. Now there are onlya few stuck in her bib! It's amazing to see how quickly she adapts to a new thing! She's had sweet potatos, bananas, avacado, Cherios, carrots, graham crackers, spaghetti squash and black beans (in that order). She's liked most everything - some more than others. She could eat only bananas and probably be quite content! In order to get her to eat carrots, it has to be mixed with something else! I usually mix it with the sweet potato, and it gets demolished. Someone suggested mixing it with peas. For whatever reason, I feel bad offering her peas... I mean, I HATE them, why should I make my kid eat them?! But to each their own. I've heard it's fun to watch them squish the peas (and by fun, it sounds really messy to me!). So, I'll probably add peas to the mix shortly. And green beans. She needs her greens (apparently). Most of these foods (other than the Cherios and crackers) are "pureed", however, I've been leaving lots of small chunks in things so she had quite a bit of texture. Ideally, I want her to be eating pieces of foods sooner rather than later. It seems like that might be easier, but at the same time, I'm enjoying making her food and feeding her. So, we'll see how we approach things. Her doctor is all about letting the child learn how to do things on their own, and we have a good friend who is doing child led feeding, and both of those sound like good ideas. I'm stuck between following rules (introduce only 1 new food every 3-4 days!) and a lack of google-knowledge about child led feeding (there is so much more info on feeding them purees and such first) that I'm hesitant to jump right in! But we are having fun with feeding, none-the-less!

1. Her eyes are still a pretty blue color
2. Her left tear duct is still plugged.
3. She cries real tears now, for sure. I do think this is something that has started recently. Now when she cries sometimes her face streams with tears, and this has not happened prior to the last week or two. She was crying in the car the other day, and when I got home her coat was all wet from the tears :( So pathetic!
4. She is majorly cutting down on her spitting up, although I am careful not to have her sit up for awhile after she eats.

Happy Birthday to Me

Today is my birthday - I'm 28!! And I am very blessed. I have a wonderful husband, a beautiful daughter and a loving family. I am healthy and happy. The sun has been shining a lot lately (which is saying something for GR), the weather is warming up (it's been in the 40's - heat wave! LOL!), and my parents are in town and are taking us to the Bonefish Grill tonight. AND AND AND..... I am going on vacation in 2 weeks, so I needed to see if I have any clothes that fit that I can wear. I did not expect anything to fit at all, and that I would have to buy an "interim" wardrobe. Today was D-day, since I want to go shopping this weekend with birthday money. And a ton of my things fit! A TON! I had no idea that anything would work at all, so needless to say, I am thrilled. Now, instead of buying an interim wardrobe, I'm able to buy things that will work for now and in the future! It doesn't get much better than that! I keep measurements on my body every so often, and I took them this morning. I'm about the same in every area (belly, legs, bootie, etc) that I was the summer of 2006 (so the summer before I got pregnant). Not to say that my body is the same as before, but in some ways, it is! It's exciting!! :)

I've been thinking lately about time. When Kayla was first born, we measured time in days (she's 2 days old, etc). Then after about 14 days, it seemed silly to continue this, so we moved to weeks... and after about 10 weeks of that, it seemed silly to continue that, so we moved to months - although I use 1/2 months too (she's 4 1/2 months, etc). I remember when I was 5 3/4 year old. I'm not sure at what point you move from using fraction of years to just being the same age for the whole year. None the less, I am 28 today, and Kayla is 7 months. But more to come on her later!!
